  1. I love the little boxes these came in. I've seen a couple up for auction before that had the original packaging. Neat find.

My one Lauffer isn't nearly as cool as this one, plus not nearly as shiny.

  2. Yeah my other lauffer mill is also quite dulled and spotted with something (water hopefully). These mills are really cool because they are made in the USA. For this reason and others I can't think these were made of teak. What do you think?

  3. I'm the designer of these and am amazed some are still around after 37 years! These were made from cherry trees harvested not far from Pittsburgh, where I live, and use a specially made Peugeut grinder we got from France. The one in the picture is also one of my favorites and extremely rare...only about 150 were made. Sometimes, the little buttons at the top and side split. I have some extras if you need them. Also, to finish them, we just used vegetable oil. You might be able to restore some of the luster by just wiping a bit on. Thanks for your comments and happy grinding! Best, Dan Droz

  4. Dan, This is amazing, I collect pepper mills, and especially artistically unique ones. I am an amateur at this, but have slowly collected them since the late 70's The other day I was floored when I saw one of your designs, it was all I could do to not knock someone down to get at it. Then I picked it and felt in in my hands and ran for the register. It was perfect I love the feel of it and when I realized it was a Peugeot works to boot, I was in heaven. I almost feel like I can stop collecting now. In trying to find out some info about you and your work I came across this site. Do you have a website? I know this sounds a little gushing but just so you know your work is still bringing joy and good eats here in the mountains of Western NC. Thanks

    1. robert: just saw this posting and thank you for your compliments. We went out of production in about '77, so there was a quite limited production. I'm so happy you're enjoying. Best, Dan

  5. I have a Droz mill that is laminated cherry, maple and what I first took to be teak. Perhaps walnut? Any thoughts?

  6. All cherry and maple. We didn't use walnut. Dan Droz

  7. Dan, I just purchased a 1975 mill that appears to be unused. However, the stopper on the top does not have a drilled hole for the salt. Were these ever sold like that? I also have another one where the top is split. Can I possible get replacements?

  8. I know it's very late in the game with this thread, but I have a nice small collection of Dan's pepper mills that I have been thinking of selling - ideally as a group, or individually.
